<lj:music>Incubus - A Certain Shade of Green</lj:music>

So finally, "Heart Broken", my Tell-tale Heart remake/re-imagining/whatever, is done.

Big thanks to Mike over at Urban Polar Bear for the editing assist. BIG TIME HELP.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the final product, especially for my first foray into this extended format. A big step up from producing 2 - 10 minute skits. This baby weighs in at almost 30 minutes.

My actors did a great job, and I hope they'll be pleased with it. The only gripes I have are the few amateurish mistakes I made that have slipped by into the final product. It's mostly sound related.

Then there's a special effect shot. I didn't give the SFX guy, Rob, enough time to work on it. But when I get my hands on a digital editing system, with Adobe After Effects, I'll do it up proper, and then release a "Heart Broken" Special Edition. Heh.

So tomorrow, Friday the 29th, I'll show it to the cast and some other invited guests. I think they'll like it.

Also, I've made my appointment for my next audition. It's with Turtle Lane Playhouse again, and the show is for Miss Saigon.

I'm auditioning for Chris, which is the lead male. But if I don't get cast, I don't think I'll accept another role. We'll see, though. I still need to get in shape for Damn Yankees, and that's about 6 months away from opening. If I don't get the part, I think I'll concentrate on getting into baseball player shape.

But after a brief hiatus from acting, I'm ready to comeback.

Another project I'm thinking of undertaking is a documentary on tattoos. I can have it correspond with the next time I get a tattoo. I'm preparing a treatment for it, to see if I can make it informative and entertaining. One idea is that in one part of the doc, I'll show the audience what the procedure of getting a tattoo is like, from picking the right parlor to choosing a tattoo and finally getting the tattoo.

I think I'd like to show that behind all the fad tattoos (i.e. tribal armbands, tribal suns, and tattoos on the lower back), there are tattoo artists who are passionate about the ages old practice.

Hmmm... I like it.

So this past Tuesday, I held the first meeting/read through for my very first short film production, "Heart Broken".

All in all, it went pretty smoothly. I talked with the actors about what their characters are like, and we all discussed what we'll be doing, and what is expected of everyone. We also nailed down the shooting schedule.

As for the read through, if that's any indication, then this should be a fun few days.

    <lj:music>Incubus - Echo</lj:music>

It has been quite some time since my last post, so I'll update what the hell I've been doing with myself...

In my day time hours, I've been getting acclimated to my new job, ahich has been the bulk of my life since 'Grease' ended.

I've finished a script, called "Heart Broken". It's what I'm calling it for now, but I like it. It's the "Tell-tale Heart" adaptation I'm sure I mentioned in a previous post. If not, since I'm not looking at my previous entries right now, here's the gist.

I didn't have the resources (a.k.a. "money") to produce my original short film idea, which was to be a horror film of sorts, set in the obligatory cabin in the woods. Well, the practical effects needed time and money. And when I lost my previous job at the beginning of Summer, there went my resources. so I scrambled to find a new idea. Ultimately, that led me to the idea of adapting a short horror story. I remembered Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-tale Heart" thanks to a conversation with a good buddy of mine.

But that seemed like a period piece so instead of a direct adaptation, I decided to write a script using "Tell-tale" as my inspiration. The result is a modern day story that expands upon some of the ideas in the original, along with some updates I felt were appropriate for this day and age. Also, I wanted to keep the same actors who committed to my original project, plus one, so I created some new characters, which actually helped to lengthen out the story a bit, as well as flesh out my version of a classic.

Will it be comparable to the original version of the story? Hell no, it's a classic. I'm not trying to live up to or be better than a classic piece of literature. I simply allowed it to inspire me to write something.

We'll be having our read-through this coming Tuesday, before which I will be touching up the script to produce the final draft. It'll be no more than 30 minutes long, much like "Weekend Getaway" my original idea. I hope to begin shooting in a couple weeks.

I was thinking about auditioning for a couple of plays since 'Grease', but for one reason or another, I opted against it. I don't know. But I WILL be auditioning for Turtle Lane's "Miss Saigon", and of course, there's "Damn Yankees" after that.

But for now, I'm concentrating on "Heart Broken". After that, things are just up in the air.

Well, this past weekend marked the end of Turtle Lane's "Grease".

It was fun, and quite the experience. Quite possibly the most fun theater experience I've ever had. Friendships were started, as did a new relationship, which only enhanced the good times.

"Grease" had a very successful run. Nearly sold out shows every night, the audiences all loved us.

Now, I take a brief break, finish a new script, and I'll possibly be auditioning for the role of Brad in the Footlight Club's production of "The Rocky Horror Show" this coming Sunday. But for now, I'll be hanging on to the memories of the past few months. All of them good.

Well, there's one weekend of shows left, and Grease is done.

I always get a little sad when a show I'm in ends. But I probably won't be so much when this one does. I truly get the sense that I'll be keeping in touch with a lot of these people, and hell, I'll even see them in the next show I'm in.

At this point in time, I know I'll audition for TLP's Miss Saigon. After that is Damn Yankees. But between Grease and Saigon, I have my short film to occupy me, and I'll likely keep tweaking it until Halloween, which is when it will air.

Instead of my originally planned story, which I can't afford to produce at this time, I'm adapting Edgar Allen Poe's "A Tell Tale Heart". It's really more of a modern re-telling, but the main crux is still there. My other story, "Weekend Getaway" will likely be shot next Summer for next Halloween. If I get so inclined, I may extend it to a feature length. But I doubt it.

So anyway, Grease is 4 shows away from being done, and I'm both ready and not ready for it to be done. Argh. It's going to be sad, but I have a feeling the audience will be awesome.

We'll see!

"Grease" Performance Week 4

Well, so far, so good. Both Thursday and Saturday were darn near packed houses. And Sunday is looking very full, too.

My performance tonight (Saturday) was a little off. I have a routine that I need to go through before a show. It's different for each show, depending on what I need to do to change into costume and hair and makeup and stuff like that, and my routine is based around that.

Unfortunately, I recieved my first scene costume late, because they weren't put in the dryer the night before. So that threw my whole pre-show ritual off. I know, it sounds like a little nit-pick that shouldn't bug me, but I've got a touch of OCD, so when I develop a pattern to do something, I have to stick to that pattern.

I don't put the blame on anyone. I have a pattern, and it kills me to change something I've already established. Anyway, as a result, I got into my own head and psyched myself out. I didn't make any huge mistakes or anything, it's just my delivery wasn't as snappy as it had been up until then, I bumped into things that I ordinarily didn't. Literally, I was 1 second behind my usual speed, and it was noticeable to no one but myself.

I freely admit that while, my pre-show pattern was the catalyst, it was my own mind that didn't let me get over it.

But tomorrow's a new day, a new show, and I'll be back on the horse. The audiences have been really good so far, and we've still got 9 more shows to go! Woo!

Well, this past weekend of shows was a little abbreviated. We didn't have a Sunday show, because Turtle Lane hosts a children's workshop over the summer, and Sunday they had a show. But this weekend saw some pretty full houses, which made the cast happy.

Lauren, the girl who plays Marty, had a repeat audience member this weekend. It was her dad. He came opening night, and said that this weekend's performance was better than the opening night's performance, which only solidifies the notion that we've become tighter, and as a result, are putting on a better show.

Now, we're halfway through the run, with about as many shows behind us as there are ahead of us. I just hope it doesn't go by TOO fast. I'm having too good a time!

Alright, so "Grease" is easing into it's groove, and everyone is feeling very comfortable performing in their roles. We've had a couple of reviews so far. There's one full length review and one "quick take" on theatermirror.com, and one in the MetroWest, as a joint review with the Reagle player's production.

Someone else from theatermirror.com was there last night, and she told Jen, our director, that she was really enjoying the show immensely. So I can't wait to see their review.

This Wednesday, some of our cast is going to check out the Reagle production. They invited us a while back, and Wednesday is the best day, since we don't have performances on Wednesdays.

It should be fun. Reagle's an Equity theater (Equity, or Actor's Equity Association, is a theater actor's union), so they will likely have a more polished look to it. But it's a different version of Grease, so it can't REALLY be compared to our version. Yeah, the story is the same, but the version Reagle is doing is more recent, whereas Turtle Lane's is the original version.

Reagle has the version that uses songs from the movie, like "Hopelessly Devoted" and "You're The One That I Want". But I'm sure it'll be a nice night out for those of us who are going.

Yesterday, I shot the opening scene of "Between Spaces". We've now shot the majority of the scenes. We have the closing scene to take care of, and some smaller scenes, but we're almost done with it. It's going well enough.

Well, opening weekend has come and gone.

The first night, the crowd was totally with us the whole time. The energy we had as a cast, plus the enthusiasm shown by the crowd made the night so great.

The second night, we were all a little tired, but we still gave it our all. This is after running the show Monday to Wednesday, having Thursday off, and then going all out on Friday. So we had ourselves a lot of energy to make up for.

And the matinee show felt good. We were chill, we've eased into the show. We've pretty much worked out any kinks that we still had, and we're free and clear to continue having a great run. I can't wait until this weekend's batch of shows!

Tonight, after several weeks, shooting my scenes in "Between Spaces" have resumed. It was relatively brief. It only took a couple hours, but we got some crucial scenes done.

Having two acting gigs simultaneously is a bit much, though. I can honestly say I won't be doing that again. Unless both are paying gigs. LOL!

The rehearsals have been great and all, but I've been really eager to get to this day. I love performing in front of an audience.

We're ready to go, as well. We've run the show several times, and we've got it down pat. Although, we've only run it a couple of times with full costume and tech and band, so this weekend we may still be working out some kinks.
Well, it's been some time since I last wrote. I had originally intended to make an entry for every single day of work I've had, but that's rather unrealistic, in hindsight. I've been real busy with "Grease", and too tired to form sentences to relay the days events.

And "Between Spaces" hasn't shot anything in the past couple of weeks, so there's nothing new to report there.

So there's the explanation. Suffice it to say that "Grease" is coming along spectacularly, in my opinion. The cast is really clicking. We've all bonded. Some moreso than others, but everyone is really cool, and we've all got our own little friendly moments. I sense no real lasting tension in the cast, which is nice and refreshing.

The musical numbers are tightening up, as well. Last night, after we ran the show, Jen told us that the "Greased Lightning" number and the scene surrounding it keeps getting stronger, and stronger. That's a nice little boost.

We open in one week from today. I'm getting really excited.

The casting of the 5 roles in my short film is almost complete. I just need one more actor, but if worse comes to worse, I'll just put myself in the role, since it would require the least amount of time on screen.

Pre-production has begun, as the storyboards are currently being worked on. I'll be doing animatics in Flash MX for the more complicated scenes. I intend on presenting all of these to my cast and crew when we have our first meeting in August, after my run in Grease is through, so they can get an idea of a) what I intend on doing, and b) how serious I am about this project.

I'm still working on coming up with a title. Right now, it's "Weekend Getaway". I just wasn't very high on "The Unkown". It seemed pretentious and generic. I haven't settled on a title, yet, though, Jessie, who will be playing Amber in the film, made a suggestion of "Uninvited Guest". Not too bad, but I think I like "Uninvited". Again, I'll be toying with it right up until I finally show it.

More as it happens.

Well, last week there was a lot of rehearsing. Mostly for the rest of the cast, because my injury kept me from fully participating.

Sunday, June 6
We ran Act I. I went through the scenes, and stepped aside when the musical numbers came up. The run through went well, though. We appear to be going really well with the scenes. There's some instances where we needed to tighten things up, but we're getting there.

Monday, June 7
I felt a part of the cast again this time. Pretty much because we were singing and didn't have to dance. However, we eventually DID go into dancing, and I had to step aside again and observe.

Tuesday and Thursday, June 8 and 10
More dancing. Observed Hand Jive on Tuesday. At this point I'm feeling pretty low. I just sat in the auditorium and watched. Detatched from the whole thing. All because I became a klutz on one night. But the observing definitely helped. I can learn visually, I think...

On Thursday, they did choreography for"Shaking At The High School Hop". Fortunately, I don't really dance in this song. I come out more than half way through, and I join in the dance that starts at the last chorus. So not too bad.

Sunday, June 13
This was the day I decided I would go without my gimp-shoe and get back into the dance. Literally. Observing really helped, because it didn't take me too long to get up to speed on the dances. Shonna (who plays Jan) helped me out, refreshing my memory on "We Go Together". And fortunately, "Hand Jive" was the song we auditioned with, so I still had some retention of it. so all in all, it worked out.

My toes were a bit sore after the rehearsal, and a little bit today, when I woke up, but they're fine now. If I keep them taped up, I'll be able to continue with minimal pain.

It was a pretty bad feeling, not being able to participate, only amplified by the fact that it was due to TWO TOES!

Well, this coming week, I only have blocking rehearsals, so no dancing, thatll give my little piggies a little bit longer of a break, so the next time I dance, it will be Monday, I believe.

Day 7 (June 1)
We did some music. And we recorded "Summer Nights" for future promotions. Nothing really big that day. It was pretty much just the one song. Although Katie, who plays Rizzo recorded "Worse things I Could Do".

I got to pick from a list of songs to sing for the pre-show. I'm torn between "Great Balls Of Fire" and "Jailhouse Rock", although I think my final choice will be "Jailhouse". It's better suited to my voice. And maybe Director Jen will let me try to get some audience participation for the end, and have them singing the part where "Rock" gets repeated. But thinking about it, that might be too complicated. I just thought of it now. But we'll see. I'll talk to her about it.

Day 8 (June 2)

This was a REALLY quick one for me. Why? Well, we had time to kill, so we ran through Act I, Scene 2 (the scene that goes into Summer Nights). There's a part where I am supposed to turn around quickly and bump into Doody, and I do this, and as I do, I jammed my foot into the staircase that was substituting for our bleachers.

Immediately, I am in some serious discomfort. I check my foot out in the bathroom, and I can tell something's not too right here. So I end up going to the emergency room.

About 3 hours later, and I learned that I had sprained my 2nd and 3rd toes. Possibly the most ridiculous injury known to man.

Well, that means no dancing for me until that's all better. It already feels better than it did when it first happened, about 24 hours ago. I'm looking at June 13th for the day when I get back into the game. That's when we review some of the dance numbers.

But unfortunately, I missed an entire scene's blocking. This sunday, for the Act I run-through, I'll get the blocking notes, so I'll have an idea.

Day 9 (June 3)
Today was a dancing rehearsal for "We Go Together". In my condition, I just observed and got as familiar as possible with the dance. Fortunately, once I'm better, I can pick the brain of Matt, the dance captain if I come in early enough to a rehearsal, which I will do, so I can catch up.

If all goes well, and I'm back when I hope to be, I will only have missed 3 musical numbers. And even if it takes a week longer, I'll still be in good shape.

Anyway, the dance to "We Go Together" looked good once the cast became acclimated to it. I can't wait until I screw it up. =D

Well, that's it for now. But the week's not over. Tomorrow, a bunch of the cast is gathering to see the new Harry Potter movie, which looks good. And Sunday, the schedule says we stumble through Act I.

Stumble being the operative word for me, appropriately enough. Oddly prophetic, even.

Chow mein.

This was a quick day. It was just us Burger Palace Boys and Rizzo, as we blocked the scene leading up to and after the "Greased Lightning" number.

I guess we all thought there'd be more, because we all were surprised that after an hour we were done.

At any rate, there are going to be plenty of comedic moments in this show. We're like a bunch of clods sometimes, it's so funny.

Well, not much for day 7, but this Tuesday, we'll be taking some pictures for all of our local newspapers to promote the show.
Thanks to my not keeping on top of the rehearsal schedule, I missed Monday's rehearsal.

But today's rehearsal, us Burger Palace Boys, as well as two other guys, learned the dance to "Greased Lightning". This is appears to be the beginning of the more complicated numbers for me. That's not to say that it'll be difficult to perform it, but it's very physical. We keep it up with these numbers and by show's end my costume will be slipping off of me.

We MOSTLY had the number down, but we had busted our asses so hard and got it down pretty well, so we let it go for the night. I'm gonna go over as much of it at home as possible.

One of the cool things about this particular dance is that I get to do moves I haven't done before, which I think will be a pleasant surprise to the folks I know who come and see the show.

That's it for now. Tomorrow, we do some more blocking.

Grooooovy.

They took about a total of 2 and a half hours or so to shoot.
Week 2 of the production began today, as the Burger Palace Boys, the Pink Ladies, Patty Simcox and Sandy learned the dance to "Summer Nights".

Jen keeps it pretty simple. Nothing flashy, and it looks great and really natural. Too many times you'll see a production of "Grease" or any other show, and you'll see dancing that's just too unnecessary. Everything here makes sense, and it keeps it fun for the cast at the same time.

Dave (playing Danny), Paul (playing Kenickie), Jed (playing Doody), Eric (as Roger) and I (as Sonny, of course) really seem to be falling together as the Burger Palace Boys. It's almost as if we're channeling the fun-loving spirit of the group. We're all joking with each other, cracking each other up with comments and actions and so on.

Jen, I hope you'll have patience with us!

Like I said in a previous post or two, we started having camaraderie early, and Dave said the same thing to me today during our break. A thought was floating around in my head that Dave thought of and spoke to me and Eric about, in that the 5 of us should get together on an off day and hang out, have dinner, have some good times, to kind of further the chemistry.

That should be fun. I think after that, we should get together with the Pink Ladies, since we ARE supposed to be a group of friends all together. Then of course, the are the general cast outings that will be occurring from time to time at Crowley's a nice restaurant/bar place nearby. I think that when all is said and done, this cast will be pretty close. I can tell.

Anyway, we went over the dance steps several times until we had it down, or really close to having it down. When we go through with the reviews, I think that'll be when it's tighter. I, of course, will be going over it in my head for the next bunch of days.

Well, that's it for now. Tomorrow, we block more scene, and learn the routine to "Magic Changes". It can't get any easier than "Summer Nights", that's for sure, but then, Jen did promise us that we would lose weight before this was all over, and we're just beginning.

Tonight, we tore through a bunch of songs. More camaraderie as we did. The vibe with this cast is really good, which makes me happy. I'm loving this.

We did the "Alma Mater", the "AlmaMater Parody", "Summer Nghts", "Greased Lightning", "Those Magic Changes" and "We Go Together".

The show's music isn't really all that complicated, so I think we'll get all the songs down really early, especially, if we nail them down large chunks at a time.

There's nothing else really new to report, but there wasn't much new going on aside from the music.

Monday, I go back to rehearsal, where we learn the dance of "Summer Nights".
Tonight, we blocked the very first scene of the show. It went really well. The chemistry between all of the Burger Palace Boys seems to be right where it should be. It seems that the Pink Ladies are right where they should be as well.

Very little to report right now, but we all seem to be fast becoming a tight cast. I'm not sure if it's just the people, or that Turtle Lane seems like such a great place or both. This being my first production with TLP, I don't have prior knowledge of how tightly knit previous casts have been. But I can't wait for this show to go into full swing.

We finally have a complete rehearsal schedule, so tomorrow (or rather, today) I have Music rehearsal, where the company learns "Summer Nights" and "Magic Changes". Should be fun!

Also, it was our director, Jen's, birthday. So there was secret card signings, and at the end of the rehearsal, a nice cake was presented. Boy was that good!

There will be more birthdays as the show goes on, mine included, on August 7th.

Tonight the cast of "Grease" met for the first time.

When I showed up, I was handed a few sheets of paper. The contract, and the rules of the Playhouse, and of course, the script.

Now, call me crazy, but signing a contract for my acting services is an exciting thought. Better than having to pay for a membership to play.

So I signed the contract and turned it in along with my contact info and biography, which will appear in the program, and I paid $10 to keep my script.

Then Jen, the director, gave us some insight about what will go on with the production. The set looks like it will be just the coolest, with neon lights all over. Looking at the set they currently have up for their production of "Nine", which looks like a bathhouse, I can't wait for the completed "Grease" set. The "Nine" set looks like it's got medium-sized ceramic tiles covering ever inch of the set. Upon closer inspection, they aren't real tiles at all. They are ALL PAINTED ON. And there's has to be literally several hundred individual tiles. Some really meticulous work here.

Costumes are taken care of in-house, as is the set construction. Turtle Lane Playhouse likes to present itself as professional as possible, and it really shows.

So after the introductions and so on, we went into the readthrough. From time to time, Jen would tell us what she intends to do with certain scenes and songs, and so on. We're going to be staying in the vein of the original Broadway production, for the most part, and Jen mentioned something of an intro to the show where some Greasers who don't sing will get the chance to, in some group songs as well as solo. So there may be hope for me to get a song yet.

The readthrough went off without a hitch, and during that time cast members were called to the costumer's room. I tried on a leather jacket, which fit virtually perfectly. Then they took my measurements. Hopefully I can lose some weight before they nail down the costume. We'll see.

Afterwards, some of us went to a local bar/restaurant to have drinks and food. I heard some great stories of what the stage crew does to try and make cast members break during the show. It was really fun.

Tomorrow, we have another rehearsal, where we block the first couple scenes. I may or may not post about every rehearsal, or maybe only the most noteworthy ones. We'll see.

This will undoubtedly be fun.

    <lj:music>Audiovent - One Small Choice</lj:music>

Well, not too long, but it HAS been a while since my last post. So here's an update to what I've been up to so far.

As a result of what I thought would be work conflicts, I had to drop out of Winthrop Playmaker's production of "Annie". I received a memo that I should expect my hours to change from morning hours to evening hours, from 2pm to 10pm starting the first week of April. Well, as a result, I felt I couldn't stay on the "Annie" production, so I dropped out. Then when all is said and done, my hours never changed. Yet another reason why I can't stand my job. It's infuriating. I essentially dropped out of the show for nothing.

But enough of the negative, now onto the positive. I have been cast as Sonny in Turtle Lane Playhouse's production of "Grease". Auditions were May 3rd and 4th, with callbacks on the 5th. The auditions were pretty easy, the callback was pretty gruelling. There was a lot of dancing involved, which if you know me, isn't my strongest suit, but if I'm taught properly, and given enough time to get it down, I can do a really good job. But all in all, I don't think I did too bad a job. I was a little nervous in the singing department, and I think that caused me to not totally let loose what I can do, but I came close.

But I got Sonny, which was my unofficial 3rd preffered role, behind Danny and Kenickie, so it worked out pretty well for your ol' Chickie.

However, I'm not sure if I get a song to sing, which is unfortunate, but at the same time, I'm not sure how this production will go. they may rearrange musical numbers or what have you, but if I don't get to sing, then I don't get to sing, I'm just happy I get to perform in the TLP. I've seen a bunch of shows there over the past several years, so it's a thrill to be a part of one. Also, it'll be cool to get to know people before I do "Damn Yankees" next spring.

In other news, SeeWhy Productions' "Between Spaces" begins production in a couple weeks.

More as it happens.
